Sometimes, life feels wonderfully full.
The house is louder.
The calendar is fuller.
We have people to love, places to go, projects to finish, and memories to make.
And then there are the mornings after.
The coffee is still warm.
The house is quiet again.
The to-do list is still there, but the pace feels different now.
After a busy week with VBS, I found myself in one of those quiet moments.
Not because everything was finished.
It wasn’t.
There were still emails to answer.
Laundry to fold.
Products to create.
Meals to plan.
A hundred little things waiting for my attention.
But for a moment, none of them felt urgent.
Jesus’ words came to mind:
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
— Matthew 6:33
I’ve heard that verse my whole life.
Sometimes I’ve treated it like another item on the checklist.
Read my Bible.
Pray.
Then get to work.
But lately, I’ve started to wonder if Jesus was giving us something more than just another task.
Maybe he was showing us a new way to start.
Before the emails.
Before the errands.
Before the decisions.
Seek first.
It’s not that God needs our attention.
It’s because we need His presence.
I’ve noticed something about my own life.
When I start with the world, I usually end up anxious.
When I start with God, my to-do list doesn’t really get shorter…
I just remember I don’t have to handle it all by myself.
Putting God first doesn’t slow life down.
It helps my heart feel steadier.
It reminds me that my value isn’t about getting everything done.
God’s love isn’t waiting for me to finish my checklist.
His love is already here.
He’s with me as I sit quietly with my coffee.
He meets me before the first notification pops up.
He walks with me into whatever this ordinary Tuesday brings.
Maybe seeking God first isn’t about making more time.
Maybe it’s about noticing that God is already with us in the time we have.
Just one quiet moment.
One deep breath.
One whispered prayer.
One choice to begin with Him.
And perhaps that’s enough.
The beautiful thing about faith is that it usually doesn’t grow all at once.
It grows in ordinary mornings.
In gentle beginnings.
It grows as we keep choosing to seek the One who has always been seeking us.
An Almost Prayer
God,
Before I rush into this day,
help me remember You are already here.
Before I carry every responsibility,
remind me that I don’t carry them alone.
Help me seek You
before my worries,
before my plans,
before my distractions.
And let that be enough to begin.
Amen.
This week’s gentle reminder: Seek First.
Inspired by Matthew 6:33, our new Variable Faith collection invites you to start each day with God. Sometimes, the smallest reminders mean the most.
